MY CLINICAL APPROACH
First, I carefully listen to your review of symptoms and concerns, your goals for physical therapy and take notes. Then I perform a thorough and comprehensive assessment to determine the structural basis of your pain symptoms, so that an effective and lasting solution can be achieved. I analyze posture, balance, strength, flexibility, coordination and more. An individualized home exercise program (HEP) is then established, monitored and progressed within your abilities and tolerance, to create a more resilient and pain-free body; allowing you to return to your prior recreational and work activities. Good medicine requires our mutual accountability.Physical Therapists are highly trained professionals specializing in the treatment of movement dysfunction (whether limitations are related to weakness, faulty posture, decreased balance, cardio-pulmonary limitations or neurological conditions). I typically have a very strong professional rapport with my patients, because they know that I am dedicated to them.
PHYSICAL THERAPISTS TREAT MOVEMENT DYSFUNCTION
Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) was a still photographer and genius who pioneered extensive studies in human and animal locomotion. He studied human locomotion during both simple activities, like rising from a chair, to walking on level surfaces, to running, playing tennis, lifting weights, wrestling, and more. His work was not only the basis for early kinesiological studies of normal anatomical movement in young healthy subjects, but he was also the father of cinematography, carefully setting timing mechanisms to the still cameras he had available at that time, to create the illusion of motion pictures. When Leland Stanford, President of Stanford University, had a wager riding against a close associate regarding Stanford's belief that at some point, all four legs of a racehorse are suspended and levitating above the racetrack, his associate strongly disagreed. Because the motion of a thoroughbred racehorse is so fast, this was difficult to ascertain with the human eye. Along came Eadweard Muybridge, who objectively proved with his progression of still photographic frames that Leland Stanford was correct!
Dr. Verne T. Inman, M.D. (1905-1980), who researched normal and abnormal gait studies on healthy subjects and patients, using penlights secured at primary joints and using motion picture analysis (of the lateral gait view) of the waveforms created by the movement of the lights as a subject walked across a stage in dim lighting. He was able to categorize these light waveforms based upon normal values vs. patients with a certain diagnoses and their related pathological gait patterns.
